India and China are arranging a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during Xi's visit for the BRICS summit in New Delhi, China's foreign ministry said on September 11.
The meeting comes at a sensitive point in the relationship. Both sides have tried to stabilise ties after years of border tensions, but mistrust continues across trade, technology, investment screening and security policy.
A leaders' meeting can improve political signalling, but the deeper test will be whether both governments can build durable mechanisms for managing differences while reopening channels for economic cooperation.
