Canada's trade and foreign ministers used visits to India this week to advance the renewed bilateral roadmap, including negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. A Canadian government readout said the two countries are intensifying efforts after the fifth negotiating round and Canada is targeting two-way trade of $70 billion by 2030.
The 14 October foreign-ministers meeting also reviewed security and law-enforcement cooperation, energy and people-to-people ties. The trade track remains a negotiation: no final CEPA text has been signed, and sectoral market-access outcomes are not yet settled in the public record.
For civil-services preparation, the development shows how economic diplomacy can proceed alongside the rebuilding of political trust. Trade agreements require reciprocal concessions and domestic adjustment, while bilateral relations also depend on security concerns, diaspora links and regulatory cooperation.
