Chinese President Xi Jinping used the New Delhi BRICS summit to push a broader 'Greater BRICS' agenda centred on AI, trade, finance and supply-chain integration.
China proposed a BRICS AI Open Source Zone to support cooperation on large language models and AI training, alongside a service-trade forum in 2027 and a special economic zone partnership. These ideas are meant to move BRICS from political signalling toward practical economic coordination.
For India, the opportunity is real but so is the strategic tension. Deeper BRICS technology cooperation could widen access to markets and research, while also increasing exposure to Chinese-led technology ecosystems.
