India's Wholesale Price Index recorded year-on-year inflation of 11.39% in September 2026, up from 9.92% in August. Primary Articles inflation was 8.67%, Fuel and Power 25.85%, and Manufactured Products 9.76%, showing broad price pressure across major WPI groups.

The statistics release also contains trial Output Producer Price Index and Input Producer Price Index series based on 2022-23. Producer-price measures are intended to capture prices received by producers and input costs more directly, but trial dissemination should not be confused with a completed replacement of the established WPI framework.

For civil-services preparation, WPI differs from CPI in coverage, weights and economic meaning. Wholesale/producer prices can transmit to consumer inflation with lags and incomplete pass-through, while fuel and commodity shocks can affect sectors unevenly. Policy analysis should therefore compare multiple price indicators rather than treating one index as the whole inflation picture.
