The National Highways Authority of India has rolled out Tamil Nadu’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Paranur on the Tambaram–Tindivanam section of NH-179B. The system combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with FASTag and is designed to let vehicles pass the toll location without stopping at a barrier.
Barrierless tolling can reduce queueing and the fuel burned while vehicles idle, while also changing the enforcement model. Instead of a boom barrier physically controlling payment, the system depends on accurate vehicle identification, account linkage and a process for handling failed reads, disputes and non-payment.
That makes data quality and grievance redressal important. ANPR errors, dirty or non-standard plates, tag-account mismatches and privacy concerns can become operational issues. Benefits such as lower congestion and emissions should be measured after deployment rather than assumed from the technology alone.
For civil-services preparation, MLFF is a useful infrastructure-governance example: digital systems can improve throughput, but performance depends on standards, interoperability, enforcement and fair dispute resolution.
