The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is being equipped with an earthquake-detection system intended to trigger safety action within seconds of significant seismic activity.
The plan includes 28 seismometers along the corridor, with additional sensors positioned away from the tracks so some seismic waves can be detected before they reach the railway. When the system detects a potentially dangerous event, trains are designed to stop automatically.
For a 508-km high-speed corridor, the important idea is not simply the number of sensors. The safety architecture depends on early detection, rapid communication and automatic train-control responses working together. The first B28 trainset is currently targeted for service on the Surat-Vapi section in 2027.
