Indian Railways reported freight loading of 135.35 million tonnes in September 2026, compared with 127.52 million tonnes a year earlier, a rise of 6.14%. Cumulative loading during April-September was also higher year on year. Foodgrain, clinker and domestic container traffic recorded notable growth.
Freight volumes matter because rail's share in bulk logistics affects transport costs, road congestion, energy use and industrial supply chains. A single month's growth should not be treated as proof of a permanent modal shift; commodity cycles, port flows and infrastructure constraints influence traffic.
For civil-services preparation, rail freight links logistics policy, infrastructure capacity and decarbonisation. The policy challenge is to improve speed, reliability and terminal connectivity so that rail can capture more freight without compromising passenger services.

Arguments, challenges and policy responses
- Rail versus road logistics
- Freight corridors and terminal capacity
- Transport decarbonisation
India’s context
Rail freight performance affects India's logistics costs, industrial competitiveness and transport emissions.
Keep in mind
One month of freight growth does not establish a long-term modal shift.
Practice question
What factors determine whether Indian Railways can sustainably increase its share of national freight movement?
Revision summary
- September rail freight grew 6.14%.
- Sustained modal shift requires reliability and connectivity.
