The September 2026 Periodic Labour Force Survey monthly bulletin reports an all-India labour-force participation rate of 55.5% for persons aged 15 years and above, up 0.2 percentage point from a year earlier. The worker-population ratio was 52.7%, while the unemployment rate stood at 5.0%, broadly stable from August and 0.2 percentage point lower year on year.
Female labour-force participation reached 34.6%, 0.5 percentage point higher than a year earlier; the rural female rate was 38.9%, up one percentage point. These figures are indicators of participation and employment status, not direct measures of job quality, wages, informality or productivity.
For civil-services preparation, PLFS should be read with its definitions and reference period. A falling unemployment rate can coexist with underemployment or low-quality work, while rising participation can change the denominator itself. Labour analysis therefore requires LFPR, WPR and unemployment to be interpreted together.
