The Digital India BHASHINI Division showcased multilingual artificial-intelligence applications at the GatiSheel Jammu & Kashmir 2.0 exhibition held from 28 to 30 September. The presentation focused on language technologies that can support citizen-facing digital services across Indian languages.
BHASHINI’s policy relevance lies in a practical governance problem: many digital services are designed first around a limited number of languages, creating access barriers for citizens who are more comfortable speaking or reading another language. Speech recognition, translation, text-to-speech and voice-first interfaces can reduce that friction.
Language AI, however, introduces its own risks. Performance can vary sharply across languages, dialects, accents and specialised terminology. In public-service settings, mistranslation can affect entitlements, complaints or legal understanding, so human review, error reporting, privacy and accessibility remain important.
For civil-services preparation, BHASHINI is a case study in inclusive digital public infrastructure. The exhibition demonstrates available applications and policy direction; it does not prove that all government services already deliver equivalent accuracy across every Indian language.
