HealthWHO’s latest estimates show global life expectancy near pre-pandemic levels as NCD burden grows
New Global Health Estimates covering 2000–2023 show recovery in longevity alongside a continued shift toward noncommunicable diseases, dementia, mental-health conditions and drug-use disorders.

The World Health Organization released updated Global Health Estimates on 2 October, covering global, regional and country health trends from 2000 through 2023. The data show that global life expectancy reached 73.3 years in 2023, close to the 73.4 years recorded in 2019 before the COVID-19 disruption.
Healthy life expectancy recovered more slowly, reaching 62.8 years in 2023. At the same time, noncommunicable diseases accounted for 74% of global deaths in 2023, up from 58% in 2000. WHO reported that eight of the ten leading causes of death were NCDs, while dementia and mental-health burdens also became more prominent.
The numbers illustrate epidemiological transition: as infectious-disease mortality falls and populations age, chronic diseases account for a larger share of death and disability. But the pattern is uneven across income groups and regions, and communicable diseases still impose major burdens in many settings.
For civil-services preparation, the estimates are useful for health-system planning and for understanding the difference between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy. They are modelled estimates built from multiple data sources, so they should be used as population-level indicators rather than exact counts of every individual death.

India’s context
Longevity has largely recovered from the pandemic shock, but the global disease burden continues shifting toward chronic disease and disability.
Keep in mind
Modelled global estimates are not the same as complete vital-registration counts for every country.
Practice question
How should health systems adapt when life expectancy recovers but noncommunicable disease and disability account for a larger share of the burden?
