A day-care cancer facility has been inaugurated at Government Medical College, Vidisha, under the Department of Atomic Energy–Tata Memorial Centre cancer-care network. The aim is to bring parts of oncology treatment closer to patients who would otherwise need repeated travel to major tertiary hospitals.
Cancer care shows why health-system design cannot rely only on large apex institutions. Chemotherapy, diagnostics and follow-up require multiple visits. Decentralised day-care centres can reduce travel costs and pressure on referral hospitals, but depend on trained staff, drug supply, referral protocols and quality assurance.
