India is scaling steel-slag roads after a 1.85-km project claimed lower cost and much higher strength

The government says processed steel slag can cut road-construction costs by around 40% and extend maintenance cycles in suitable applications.

The Science and Technology Ministry is pushing wider adoption of steel-slag road technology after a 1.85-km road at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh received a Guinness record for the world's longest road built with processed steel-slag aggregates.

The government says the technology can reduce construction cost by around 40% and provide up to four times the strength of conventional roads in suitable applications, while extending major maintenance intervals.

The bigger policy idea is circular infrastructure. Steel slag is an industrial by-product, so using it as road aggregate can reduce waste and demand for virgin stone. Claims about cost and durability, however, still depend on engineering conditions and wider replication.
