The eighth India-UK Science and Innovation Council meeting on 12 October included inauguration of the BRIC-CDFD–Oxford Nanopore Technologies India Genomics Centre of Excellence in New Delhi. The collaboration is intended to strengthen genomics research, sequencing capacity and application of advanced platforms.
The wider council agenda covered artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, telecommunications, net-zero technologies, climate and geohazards, healthcare and basic science. A centre of excellence is a research and capacity-building platform; it should not be presented as immediate population-wide genetic screening or a new clinical entitlement.
For civil-services preparation, genomics links biotechnology, public health, research infrastructure, data governance and ethical safeguards. International science collaboration can accelerate access to platforms and expertise, but genomic data require strong privacy, consent, security and equitable-benefit frameworks.
