Poshan Maah 2026 shifts attention to community ownership of Anganwadis
The ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah is scheduled to begin on September 9 with a governance theme that goes beyond nutrition delivery alone.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development will launch the ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah in Varanasi on September 9. The month-long campaign is built around the theme “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari”, placing community participation and local accountability at the centre of the nutrition programme.
Poshan Abhiyaan was launched in 2018 to address malnutrition through convergence across nutrition, health, sanitation and behavioural interventions. The 2026 campaign will emphasise the role of Anganwadi Management Committees and local participation. The ministry has also highlighted revised supplementary nutrition guidelines, including hot cooked meals and menu-display requirements, and will mark ten years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
The policy problem is multidimensional. Malnutrition cannot be reduced only by supplying calories: maternal health, sanitation, disease, dietary diversity, women’s agency, household income, breastfeeding practices and service quality all affect outcomes. Anganwadi centres sit at the frontline of this system, which is why community monitoring can matter when it improves attendance, food quality, growth monitoring and accountability rather than becoming a paper committee.
