India has put its first imaging satellite into geosynchronous orbit
EOS-05 is designed to watch large areas for longer, changing how India can monitor weather, disasters, agriculture and the ground below.

ISRO has launched EOS-05, described as India's first imaging satellite designed for geosynchronous operations. The 2,367-kg spacecraft was placed into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit before it begins the manoeuvres needed to reach its operational position. It is also India's heaviest Earth-observation satellite so far.
Most familiar Earth-observation satellites circle the planet in low Earth orbit. They pass over a location, collect imagery and then move on, returning later on another orbit. That approach is excellent for high-resolution mapping, but it limits how continuously a satellite can observe the same broad region.
A geosynchronous satellite operates much farther from Earth and moves in step with the planet's rotation. Depending on its final orbit and mission design, that can allow it to keep a much more persistent view of a large area. For imaging, the advantage is not simply a bigger photograph. It is the ability to watch change unfold over time.
That has practical value across disaster management, weather-linked monitoring, agriculture, coastlines and environmental change. During a cyclone, flood, wildfire or landslide, repeated observations can help authorities understand how quickly conditions are moving. In agriculture, broad-area monitoring can support crop assessment and water planning. Strategic users also value the ability to observe large regions more consistently.
EOS-05 therefore sits at the intersection of civil infrastructure and national capability. Earth-observation data increasingly feeds insurance, logistics, urban planning, climate analysis and security. A country that can collect and process more of that data independently has more control over critical information during emergencies.
The launch also matters after a difficult year for India's space programme. A successful heavy Earth-observation mission gives ISRO another platform as it prepares for a much more ambitious calendar, including the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission that the agency says is targeted for this year.
Space headlines often focus on the rocket. The more important question is what happens after orbit. EOS-05 is about building a more persistent view of India and its surroundings, turning satellite imaging from periodic snapshots into something closer to continuous observation.
