The United States’ share of India’s LPG imports has risen to more than 50% over the past six months, compared with less than 10% in the previous six-month period, according to trade data analysed by The Indian Express. The change accelerated as conflict around the Strait of Hormuz disrupted traditional West Asian supply patterns.
This is diversification under pressure rather than a simple commercial preference. LPG is socially important in India because household cooking programmes have expanded access dramatically. Supply disruptions therefore affect import bills, subsidies, household welfare and inflation.
