India has joined more than 20 governments in a 6G-focused security initiative as countries begin shaping the rules and technical standards for the next generation of mobile networks. The Indian government's Bharat 6G vision includes an ambition to secure a meaningful share of global 6G intellectual property and standard-setting influence.
The strategic issue is that telecom standards determine much more than speed. They influence equipment ecosystems, cybersecurity requirements, patent royalties and the degree of dependence on foreign vendors. Countries that help write standards can gain both commercial and security advantages.
A key factual caution is necessary: the frequently cited 10% figure is a policy target for India's contribution to 6G standards and patents, not an achieved share. 6G itself remains in a pre-commercial development and standardisation phase.
