The India Meteorological Department held a training workshop on cyclone and marine weather warning services on 9 October, with more than 650 stakeholders participating. The programme covered forecast products and warnings for coastal communities, fishers, ports, disaster managers and media.
A key element was a demonstration of IMD’s Cyclone and Marine Weather Services Decision Support System for the public. Decision-support systems aim to bring forecasts, warnings and context into a form that helps users decide when and how to act.
Forecast skill is only one part of disaster-risk reduction. Warnings must reach the right people, be understood, be trusted and connect to evacuation, port and fishing decisions. False alarms, digital access gaps and local-language communication can influence whether technically accurate warnings save lives.
For civil-services preparation, the workshop illustrates the last-mile problem in early-warning systems. Disaster resilience depends on the full chain from observation and modelling to communication and public action.
