The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth ₹4,106 crore on 15 October for GSAT-7C and Varunastra. The ₹2,563-crore GSAT-7C contract with NewSpace India Limited is intended to provide a dedicated indigenous communication satellite for the Indian Air Force, while the ₹1,543-crore Varunastra contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited covers ship-launched heavyweight anti-submarine torpedoes.
The procurements illustrate two different strands of defence capability: secure space-based communications and underwater warfare. Varunastra was developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory under DRDO, while GSAT-7C strengthens sovereign military communication architecture.
For civil-services preparation, the issue connects indigenisation, strategic space assets, anti-submarine warfare and defence public-sector production. Contract signing is a procurement milestone; it should not be confused with immediate operational deployment of all contracted systems.
