The Railways Ministry has inaugurated or advanced five Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal projects in Gujarat, including the Shivlakha terminal and the foundation stone for Linch GCT.
The ministry says the terminals are intended to improve freight handling, reduce logistics costs and connect regional businesses with ports and national markets. A salt-loaded freight train was also flagged off from Shivlakha to Mithapur, using lightweight stainless-steel containers designed for easier handling.
The wider policy issue is modal shift. Moving suitable bulk freight from road to rail can reduce logistics costs, road congestion and emissions, but the gains depend on reliable first-mile and last-mile connectivity around the terminals.
