China’s export surge is reshaping the trade picture

China reported a sharp acceleration in trade in August, with exports up 25% from a year earlier and imports up 28.2%. High-technology exports have also risen strongly this year, while the country continues to run a very large merchandise trade surplus.

The numbers matter beyond China. A stronger export push can intensify competition in third-country markets and increase pressure for tariffs or industrial-policy responses. Higher Chinese imports, meanwhile, can support commodity exporters and regional supply chains. For India, the challenge is to deepen manufacturing while remaining integrated with supply chains that still depend on Chinese intermediate goods.
