The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority facilitated the dispatch of one metric tonne of popped makhana from Purnea, Bihar, for export to Greece on 2 October.
The consignment is being routed from Mundra Port to Piraeus Port. APEDA said the export achieved a higher price realisation than the prevailing domestic selling price, although one shipment cannot establish a durable export premium for the wider market.
Makhana is closely associated with the wetlands and livelihoods of Bihar, particularly the Mithila and north-eastern parts of the State. Expanding exports requires more than demand: quality consistency, processing, packaging, food-safety compliance, logistics, traceability and reliable aggregation determine whether small producers can benefit.
For civil-services preparation, the development is a useful example of agricultural value addition and export diversification. The policy question is how local specialty products can move up the value chain without concentrating gains only among processors and intermediaries.
