India is marking the 100th birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika, the singer, composer, poet and filmmaker whose work carried Assamese and wider Northeastern cultural themes to a national audience. The Prime Minister paid tribute to him on September 8.

Hazarika combined folk traditions, mass communication and social themes. His songs addressed rivers, migration, inequality, labour, dignity and cultural belonging, placing his work at the intersection of music, regional identity and post-independence nation-building.
