Apple Pay launches in India with Axis Bank as its first banking partner

The service enters India through eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards, adding a global wallet to a payments market still dominated by UPI.

Apple Pay has launched in India through a partnership with Axis Bank, giving the service its first banking foothold in the country.

Eligible Axis Bank customers can add supported Visa and Mastercard credit cards to Apple Wallet and use Apple devices for contactless payments in stores, apps and online. RuPay cards are not part of the initial rollout.

The larger question is how global wallet products will fit into India's digital-payments ecosystem. UPI remains the dominant payment rail by volume, while Apple Pay adds another layer for card users who already use iPhones and Apple Watches.
