The Allahabad High Court has directed that its displeasure with the Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate and other officials be noted in service records after quashing the National Security Act detention of law student Aakriti Chaudhary. The detailed order also granted ₹5 lakh compensation, to be recovered from the salaries of officials found responsible for the detention process.

Preventive detention gives the state exceptional power to restrict liberty before a conventional criminal conviction. That makes procedural safeguards and the distinction between ordinary law-and-order problems and threats to public order especially important. The judgment places administrative decision-making, not only the final detention order, under scrutiny.

UPSC relevance: GS II — Fundamental Rights, preventive detention, rule of law and civil-service accountability. Article 22 provides the constitutional framework for preventive detention, but judicial review remains a key safeguard against arbitrary use.
