Ahead of World Mental Health Day 2026, the Union Health Ministry reported that Tele-MANAS had received more than 47.75 lakh calls since its launch on 10 October 2022. The service provides free, confidential and round-the-clock mental-health support through the toll-free number 14416, with 53 Tele-MANAS cells operating across all 36 States and Union Territories.
The ministry also said mental-health services have been integrated into more than 1.83 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and that the District Mental Health Programme has been sanctioned for 767 districts. A new MANN Jaagriti initiative is intended to strengthen awareness, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help earlier.
The figures show the reach of a public digital-health access point, but call volumes do not by themselves measure clinical outcomes. Effective mental-health care also depends on referral pathways, trained professionals, continuity of care, emergency response and the quality of services available after a caller is identified as needing further support.
For civil-services preparation, Tele-MANAS is a useful example of using digital public infrastructure to widen access to healthcare while retaining a wider district and primary-care network. The policy question is how to convert first-contact access into sustained, rights-based and clinically appropriate care.
