The National Biodiversity Authority reported receiving ₹9.68 crore under India’s Access and Benefit Sharing framework between April and September 2026. Of this, ₹9.56 crore was linked to access to biological resources, with the agriculture seed sector contributing ₹7.16 crore.

Access and Benefit Sharing is intended to ensure that commercial or research use of biological resources is accompanied by fair sharing of benefits with relevant stakeholders and biodiversity-management systems. The framework operates under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, as amended in 2023, and related regulations.

Receipts show that the regulatory mechanism is generating payments, but the harder governance question is how benefits reach local communities and conservation priorities. Collection totals alone do not establish whether distribution is timely, equitable or ecologically effective.

For civil-services preparation, the development connects biodiversity governance with the Convention on Biological Diversity’s benefit-sharing principle. It also illustrates how environmental regulation can use monetary and non-monetary benefit mechanisms rather than relying only on prohibitions.
