Project Cheetah has reached a new breeding milestone at Kuno National Park. KGP12, a female cheetah born in India to the South African cheetah Gamini, has given birth to four cubs.
The latest litter takes India's cheetah population to 56, according to the reported figures, with 36 of those animals born in India. Kuno holds most of the population, while a smaller group is at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
The significance is generational rather than numerical alone: an animal born after the reintroduction programme began is now reproducing in India. The longer-term test, however, remains whether the programme can establish a viable, self-sustaining population under Indian conditions.
