India wants 100 GW of nuclear power. That creates a uranium problem
An elevenfold expansion in nuclear capacity will require far more than reactors. India is now widening fuel relationships from Australia to Uzbekistan.

India's nuclear ambition has a simple headline and a difficult supply-chain problem underneath it. The country wants to expand installed nuclear capacity from about 8.8 GW today to roughly 22 GW by 2031-32 and eventually 100 GW by 2047. Reaching that scale would make nuclear power a far larger part of India's electricity system. It would also require a dependable long-term supply of uranium.
That is why India is widening and renewing uranium relationships with countries including Australia and Uzbekistan. Nuclear plants can operate for long periods and provide electricity around the clock, but their economics depend on secure fuel availability. A reactor without a reliable fuel chain is not energy security.
India does have domestic uranium resources, but quality, mining constraints and the pace of future reactor construction mean imported fuel remains important for parts of the programme. The country has historically diversified supplies across several partners to avoid dependence on a single source.
The 100 GW target makes that diversification more urgent. Nuclear power is attractive to India because electricity demand is rising rapidly while the country is also trying to reduce the carbon intensity of its energy system. Solar and wind can be deployed quickly, but their output varies. Nuclear plants offer firm, low-carbon generation that can support the grid when renewable output is low.
The trade-off is complexity. Nuclear projects are expensive, slow to build and heavily regulated. They require specialist manufacturing, skilled workers, long approval cycles, waste management and public acceptance. Fuel is one part of that chain, but it is a strategic one because uranium markets are concentrated and geopolitics can reshape access.
India is also considering how to finance the expansion. Policy thinkers have argued that nuclear power should qualify for green-finance mechanisms so projects can access a wider pool of capital. Estimates for the investment needed to reach the long-term target run into hundreds of billions of dollars.
The result is that India's nuclear push is becoming less about individual reactor announcements and more about building an ecosystem: finance, fuel, technology, manufacturing and people. The 100 GW number describes the destination. The uranium diplomacy now under way shows how much infrastructure has to be built around it before India can get there.
