More than 90,000 affected as Himalayan disaster risks trigger fresh evacuations
Rescue work in Nepal was briefly halted after a landslide-dammed lake began overflowing, adding to fears of cascading floods.

More than 90,000 people have been affected by the Himalayan landslide and flood disaster, the Red Cross said, as emergency teams deal not only with the damage already caused but also with the risk of new floods and landslides.
In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, helicopter rescue operations were temporarily paused after reports that a landslide-dammed lake had begun overflowing. That detail captures the difficulty of responding to disasters in steep mountain terrain: the first event can create a second one.
When landslides block a river, water can build behind debris and form a temporary lake. If that natural dam fails suddenly, the stored water can rush downstream with little warning. Rescue teams therefore have to work in areas where the landscape itself may still be changing.
Road damage makes the problem worse. Mountain communities often depend on a small number of routes that follow river valleys or cut across unstable slopes. Once those roads are blocked, moving heavy equipment, food, fuel and medical supplies becomes slow and dangerous.
Helicopters can reach places that vehicles cannot, but they are limited by weather, visibility, altitude and the number of safe landing areas. A rescue operation that looks straightforward on a map can become impossible when clouds close in or when the ground below remains unstable.
The disaster also shows how infrastructure can amplify exposure. Hydropower plants, roads, bridges and settlements are frequently built close to rivers because mountain geography leaves few alternatives. That makes economic development possible, but it also concentrates risk along the same corridors.
The Red Cross figure of more than 90,000 affected people includes far more than those killed or injured. A person can be counted as affected because a home was damaged, access to drinking water was lost, a road was cut off or a livelihood disappeared. Those indirect effects can last for months after the immediate emergency ends.
There is a climate dimension, but it needs to be handled carefully. The Himalayas are warming rapidly, glaciers are changing and extreme rainfall is becoming a larger concern across the region. Those trends can increase the background risk of cascading disasters, but scientists still need event-specific analysis before assigning direct causation to a single flood or landslide.
For now, responders are dealing with the immediate reality: unstable terrain, damaged infrastructure and communities that may still be cut off.
The next phase will be slower and less visible. Authorities will need to restore roads, repair power systems, relocate families where necessary and reassess whether some infrastructure was built in areas that have become too dangerous.
In the Himalayas, recovery cannot only mean rebuilding what was there before. It also has to mean understanding whether the ground itself has changed.
