The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved two sets of railway multitracking projects covering eight projects in total. Together, the packages involve investment of roughly ₹20,800 crore and are expected to add close to 1,200 route kilometres of capacity across 31 districts.

The significance is not only construction spending. Additional tracks can reduce bottlenecks where passenger and freight trains compete for scarce line capacity, improve reliability and support a shift of bulk freight from road to rail. That can influence logistics costs as well as emissions intensity.

For exam preparation, the projects are best linked to multimodal logistics, public infrastructure investment and network effects. Rail capacity delivers its largest gains when it connects industrial centres, ports, mines and consumption markets rather than being assessed only project by project.
